It’s 2021 and Gen Z has reclaimed the Goth, Grunge, Punk, and E-girl scene. We are seeing corsets back in fashion and as a Goth, it really makes me happy that the Goth scene is getting normalized again. As someone, who has always been fascinated by corsets and their ability to amp up my look, these are some of the things I have learned that work as a charm to style, accessorize and eventually learn these Victorian inventions.
- Black and white corsets are your friends
I know you want to jump on the wagon and buy that beautiful steampunk corset because it is literally so beautiful- trust me, I’ve been there but until and unless you are going for a super narrowed down look, I say you try a basic corset (I know, I know, being basic is such a crime!). a black and a white can be styled in many ways will definitely make you look good and they can literally be used on anything so trust me when I say this.
- Sizing matters
I remember this time I bought a beautiful corset top my own size but when I tried it, it was really choking me (something that I do not wish my clothes to do, but if you are a J-Goth, it may work). Anyway, my point of this personal embarrassing story is that sometimes sizing matters and corsets are supposed to be tight but please check your sizing so that once when you tie the corset, it does not choke you.
- Feeling uncomfortable? Here are some tips
Corsets can really make one uncomfortable especially if you are not ok with skin showing. Your best bet? Style it in a way that you can wear outside. Throw it over a sheer top or a full-length top (I usually advise ribbed material because they are stretchy and can accommodate a corset. Tuck in under trousers. Wear long boots and choose denser fishnets to go over.
- Lace corset top earns brownie points for being comfortable
Of course, my other picks are mesh, cotton blends or satin in terms of comfort but mesh wins because it is so light and airy. A good mesh corset will always make you feel good on the skin with no rashes or marks so if you are getting into it, avoid going for something that can give you discomfort. This is very true if you are picking leather because leather can make you really sweaty in the summers so pick wisely.
- Do not wear it for long times
I am serious. Corsets are beautiful but they can be majorly uncomfortable in the long run. You can always opt for something like a corset top (available in various sizes and less taxing), a corset belt (flexible, reliable and can be taken off anytime) or a simple lace up clothing piece. We have been having a conversation about this and it is undeniable that the corset for prolonged times can actually do damage so listen to experts and please don’t extend yourself too much.
